What Size Roll-Off Dumpster Do I Need?

Imagine it’s just about time to start your next big home renovation project: The paint’s picked out, the tools are handy, and you’re all set to swing hammers and get started with the demolition. Just one problem: How are you going to handle the mountain of debris? ASAP Site Services has you covered with a roll-off dumpster that is the perfect size for your project’s needs. If you’re worried about renting the right size dumpster for your project, don’t be! We’ve put together a guide to help our customers choose the right option, whether you’re redoing a bedroom or revamping your entire office building.

Decoding Dumpster Dimensions

The first step toward getting the right dumpster for the job is understanding the differences in dumpster dimensions. The exterior of a dumpster is measured in feet, while the interior capacity is measured in cubic yards (i.e., 3’ length x 3’ width x 3’ depth). ASAP Site Services offers rentals ranging from 10 cubic yards to 40 cubic yards, covering anything from a garage cleanout to a major commercial construction project.

With these dimensions in mind, a great visual size estimator for your perfect roll-off dumpster is one kitchen oven per cubic yard. Try to think about how many ovens’ worth of waste you might need to get rid of. An alternative estimate you can use is to compare cubic yards to pickup truck capacities. An average pickup truck has a 2 cubic yard capacity so a 20-yard dumpster will have the capacity of about 10 pickup truck loads. When it’s time for us to haul your dumpster away, your load should not exceed the rental unit’s height, so be sure that the top of the waste pile is beneath or level with the rim of the dumpster.

15-Yard Roll-Off Dumpster (1 ton)

20-Yard Roll-Off Dumpster (2 tons)

30-Yard Roll-Off Dumpster (2 tons)

40-Yard Roll-Off Dumpster (4 tons)

Standard roll-off dumpsters may not be used to dispose of concrete, clean dirt, or similar materials. We offer separate clean concrete or clean dirt dumpsters specifically for unloading brick, concrete blocks, driveway material, stucco, tile roofing, etc.

Other Space Considerations

Now that you’ve determined the dumpster capacity you need, you’ll also have to consider the exterior space requirements for placing the dumpster on your job site. We recommend that you place your dumpster in an area that can accommodate twice the width and height of your chosen unit. Be sure to leave a healthy amount of space around the dumpster to make it easy to toss your debris without any tricky maneuvers.

Keep in mind that ASAP Site Services will deliver your dumpster on the back of a roll-off truck, so think about the truck size when you plan your roll-off dumpster delivery. Will there be room for the driver to pull up to your chosen placement site? Also, you should be sure to leave an additional 10 feet of clearance behind the dumpster so the rear door can open. In order to prevent any damage to the placement area, we recommend placing a 4’ by 8’ sheet of plywood underneath the dumpster.

Different Types of Roll-Off Dumpsters

Another important consideration for a dumpster rental is what you’re going to throw away during the job. Our dumpsters can handle almost anything you can throw in them, but there are a few prohibited items, such as hazardous waste, chemicals, appliances, etc. For a list of materials, you cannot dispose of in a standard roll-off dumpster, check our FAQs page.

If you need to dispose of one specific type of clean material (tiles, manure, brick, driveway pavement, etc.), we also offer specialty dumpsters for clean dirt and clean concrete loads. These specialty rentals can be incredibly helpful if you’re embarking on a major landscaping overhaul or replacing a driveway. We offer clean concrete and dirt roll-off dumpsters in 10-yard and 20-yard capacities.

Weighing In

Another critical factor in determining what size dumpster you’ll need to rent is the expected weight of your haul. Each one of our roll-off dumpster rental products has a different tonnage capacity, which you can check here. If you anticipate a particularly heavy load, or if you think you may exceed the tonnage limit on your rental, you will face an additional overage fee. To avoid these fees, feel free to contact our rental team to discuss your needs in detail. Our experts can advise you on the best dumpster solution for your project, whether you need to schedule an additional haul, and if ordering more than one dumpster might be the best idea for you.
